Job Description

About the position The GM Motorsports Program is seeking a Performance Engineer to focus on developing and implementing analysis to characterize competitor performance through assessing the areas of strength and weakness across the competitor field and identifying the most important contributions to competition success. This analysis will span a variety of approaches, both utilizing data analytics to derive direct insight from on-track telemetry/timing and scoring data and resolving vehicle parameters by developing vehicle models and regressing model parameters from measured on-track data. As the only member of the team focused in this area, this role requires someone well versed in vehicle dynamics, specifically as applied to motorsports, who has vision and motivation to develop and build a program from the ground up. Close collaboration with other members of the Performance Engineering group and regular interaction with members across the greater GM Motorsports group and customer race teams is required. In this role, you will conceptualize competitor analysis techniques and prototype models and analysis routines which implement these analysis methods. You will work with data acquisition and testing groups to develop proper instrumentation to validate data sources provided in track feeds, quantifying the precision and accuracy of input data. Additionally, you will execute competitor performance characterizations to derive insight for race event reporting and guide long-term vehicle development projects. Collaboration with GM Motorsports Simulation, Data Analytics, Strategy, and Software Development groups will be essential to derive an optimal architecture and implementation plan to build software and support for week-to-week production operations. You will also engage with GM Internal groups and external partners to understand analysis areas to target for the greatest benefit, answer open questions across all GM Motorsports groups, and brainstorm new ways of achieving greater performance in targeted areas. Training others to develop an understanding of underlying models and knowledge to execute regular analysis and reporting tasks will also be part of your responsibilities. Responsibilities • Develop competitor analysis techniques , • Conceptualize competitor analysis techniques , • Prototype models and analysis routines which implement these analysis methods , • Work with data acquisition and testing groups to develop proper instrumentation to validate data sources provided in track feeds , • Quantify precision and accuracy of input data , • Execute competitor performance characterizations to derive insight for race event reporting and guide long-term vehicle development projects , • Collaborate with GM Motorsports Simulation, Data Analytics, Strategy, and Software Development groups to derive an optimal architecture and implementation plan to build software and support for week-to-week production operations , • Engage with GM Internal groups and external partners to understand analysis areas to target for greatest benefit , • Answer open questions across all GM Motorsports groups, building group knowledge , • Brainstorm new ways of achieving greater performance in targeted areas , • Train others developing understanding of underlying models and knowledge to execute regular analysis and reporting tasks Requirements • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related subject , • 5+ years of experience in a top-level motorsports series including NASCAR, IMSA, F1, IndyCar, WEC, or similar , • Intimate knowledge of simulation workflows in a professional motorsports organization including both offline simulation and the DIL simulator , • Experience developing and using simulation tools to optimize vehicle performance , • Proficient programming in Python, MATLAB, or similar language , • Extensive experience analyzing on-track performance through both application vehicle dynamics principles and statistical methods , • Strong organization skills, forward thinking mentality, and a superb attention to detail , • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, with exceptional work ethic and integrity Nice-to-haves • Race Engineering experience with intimate knowledge of race car setup, event preparation, technical inspection, race procedures and race strategy , • Proficiency in Motorsports data analysis software including Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec or similar , • Experience in multibody modeling and simulation using Dymola/Modelica, ADAMS, or similar , • Knowledge in tire modeling, construction, testing, and validation , • Experience with aerodynamic testing and applying physical and/or CFD results to vehicle modeling tools for on-track performance optimization , • Familiarity with vehicle testing methods and data reduction from on-track testing, SPMM, and 7-post Benefits • Paid time off including vacation days, holidays, and parental leave for mothers, fathers and adoptive parents , • Healthcare (including a triple tax advantaged health savings account and wellness incentive), dental, vision and life insurance plans to cover you and your family , • Company and matching contributions to 401K savings plan to help you save for retirement , • Global recognition program for peers and leaders to recognize and be recognized for results and behaviors that reflect our company values , • Tuition assistance and student loan refinancing , • Discount on GM vehicles for you, your family and friends
